Why I won’t crack you before seeing your X-rays

Have you ever used an old camera?

Have you ever tried taking a selfie with it? It can be quite a challenge, to say the least.

I’m Dr Kelvin the Chiro. I’m the founder of YOU Chiropractic.

Today, I will show you why some chiropractors refer you to get some X-rays before you start your chiropractic care.

These days your smart phone has a lens at the front. This takes out all the guess work involved in taking a selfie.

Right now i can see that I fit nicely into my camera’s frame. I know you can see this TV screen next to me. I don’t need to guess or even worse – assume that the frame is where it should be.

With an old school camera, you can technically take a selfie with it but you’re going to be wasting a lot of time and energy.

You’ll make mistakes, correct them and then you’ll try again. Trial and error. And a lot of frustration!

Imagine you’re seeing your chiropractor and he or she has no clue what your spine looks like. Because it’s hidden underneath all that skin and muscle.

Your chiropractor then starts adjusting you. That’s the infamous “crack” that you hear. Using only their sense of touch and feel plus the little information that you’ve provided them.

Your chiropractor will be able to guess and assume to the best of their ability, how your spine is doing, where it’s having the most issues and the parts of your spine that are doing okay.

Now imagine your chiropractor has access to your X-rays. He or she will be able to know exactly:

  1. Where your underlying problems are.
  2. How it relates to your condition.
  3. How long it’s been there for.
  4. Where to treat and more importantly, what not to treat.

Chiropractors are trained to analyse your spinal X-rays in great detail. While your doctor will look for urgent problems like a broken bone or a dislocation, Chiropractors look for abnormal alignment and the degree of wear and tear. Both of which are more subtle but important.

If you ask me, X-rays are needed before starting chiropractic care.

Chiropractic is more a lifestyle than a treatment

What do chiropractors treat?

Do chiropractors treat pain? Do they treat back injuries? Neck injuries? Can a chiropractor treat my hunchback posture?

Today, I will show you why chiropractic is more of a lifestyle than a treatment. I’ll give you an example.

Many people practice yoga, go to the gym to lift weights or do long distance running. Most of them don’t do it because it fixes a problem or a condition they’re having.

Whether it’s tight muscles, back pain or a knee injury. They do it because it’s something they’ve incorporated into their lifestyle. Into their daily routine.

It’s more of a habit that they’ve chosen to do. And they do it on a regular basis.

Because of what it provides them, because of how it makes them feel or because of what it ultimately means to them.

If you practice yoga every week, you’ll know it gives you a sense of calmness. A stronger connection between your mind and your body. It may also help to relieve tight muscles.

If you love lifting weights at the gym, you’ll know how strong you feel right after. You check yourself out in the mirror, muscles all pumped! But it also gives you relief for a recurring knee injury.

If you run every day, you’ll know how much of a high it gives you. Not mentioning the feeling of invigoration throughout your day. But running also loosens up your stiff lower back.

The thing is, good lifestyle habits provide so many benefits for your health, your fitness, your mind and your body. It’s because of the consistency and time that a lifestyle provides.

Whereas a treatment can be rather short-sighted in comparison. A quick fix versus a long-term solution.

Chiropractic care is a lifestyle habit too. Sure, you may use it only as a treatment for a stiff neck or stiff low back. But is it the best way to use it?

Or is it better to incorporate it into your self-care routine. Just like eating healthy, brushing your teeth and getting enough sleep?

If you ask me, Chiropractic is more a lifestyle than a treatment.

Why I paid money to fight in a cage

Have you ever fought for something you believed in?

Have you ever fell, then mustered the spirit to get up and keep moving forward with pure will?

I’m Dr Kelvin the Chiro. I’m the founder of YOU Chiropractic.
Today, I will share with you the reason I dedicated 5 months of my life to eventually having a mixed martial arts fight.

It was June 2018 and I was seeing a few clients who were MMA fighters.
If you don’t know what MMA is, it stands for mixed martial arts which is a form of combat sports similar to boxing and wrestling.

You might have heard of their biggest promotion called the “UFC” before.

So these clients I was helping had so many issues with their spine, especially so with their neck. You have to understand, MMA fighters punch and kick other fighters all the time.

But they also GET kicked and punched in the head. And this happens again and again and again.

Unlike most people, their issues kept coming back the same way. Now, I understood what they were going through in theory. But I was curious to see just how MUCH trauma they were absorbing from this sport.

So I signed up for this thing called wimp 2 warrior, to put myself through the process of understanding these clients better.

The first 10 weeks of training was relatively easy for me. It was like a boot camp. You go through a lot of high intensity training, a lot of body weight exercises. All to build up your fitness and endurance for a fight.

I thought, “how much tougher can this get?”. Well, the last 12 weeks of training we started sparring. This meant that we started to hit each other, to choke each other out and simulating the fight as best as we could.

If you’ve never been punched or kicked by someone at full force, I don’t recommend it!

As it got closer to the date of my fight, I felt my body breaking down. From head to toe.

My calves were as stiff as a tree trunk, my thighs all bruised up. My arms were always sore and my face was painted with black eyes and friction marks (from the gloves).

I was in the best shape of my life yet broken with injuries. It was one of the best times of my life, and at the same time one of the worst.

A message to my MMA fighting clients: I now know why you’re always broken!

The Beginner’s Guide to Chiropractic

 

You’ve decided to start getting regular spinal checkups. You’re starting to experience some real benefits of chiropractic care.

You might be feeling:

  1. Lighter, looser and less tense.
  2. More energetic, you’re sleeping better and your mood is great.
  3. Less pain, more comfort and mentally more positive.
  4. More upright, stronger posture and less slouching.

What’s next?

Firstly keep up the good work. Getting your spine healthier is a process. It takes time, consistency and some amount of effort.

This is the formula I use with great success to help others in my community of Ultimo, Pyrmont, Haymarket, Glebe and Chippendale who have been in your shoes before:

  1. Stick to your recommendations until your first review.
  2. Attend a spinal exercises workshop to know what exercises to do to strengthen your spine.
  3. Look out for our latest blog post or podcast episode to help manage your stress and injuries.

How Often Should You See a Chiropractor?

 

That’s a good question isn’t it? If you’re anything like most people I see in practice, you’re probably unsure about this.

How long will it take to help my symptoms? How many spinal checkups do I need to get my spine healthy? Am I getting checked too often or not enough?

The answer: It depends. On 2 things:

  1. The current state of your spine. From your assessment, how well is your spine working currently? Are there signs showing active degeneration or is it in a stable condition?
  2. How much damage has been done? Problems in the spine are caused by past injuries and stress accumulated over time. What did your X-rays show?

If you’re not sure, ask your chiropractor again to fully understand where you’re at.

If there are signs your spine is prematurely degenerating (your spine is older than what it should be for your age), then you need to prioritise slowing this process down. This usually takes 6 – 12 weeks depending on the current state of your spine and how much damage has already been done.

If your spine is stable, then it’s much easier to get your spine healthier. The priority will be to have regular checkups every month on an ongoing basis.

“Use it or lose it”

If you don’t exercise regularly, you will lose your strength and fitness. If you don’t brush your teeth or have regular dental cleanups with your dentist, you will lose your welcoming smile.

If you don’t look after your spine regularly, you will age quicker and develop symptoms in the process.

If you’ve had your 1st adjustment with us recently, you will be due for a checkup soon. On your next checkup, I will discuss with you how long it will take to stabilise your spine and how many checkups you will need in that time frame.
